Dadra and Nagar Haveli is a union territory of India. It is located near the west coast and has two distinct parts. Dadra is surrounded by the state of Gujarat and Nagar Haveli is situated on the border of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The most remarkable thing about Dadra and Nagar Haveli is its beauty. Lush green forests, rolling rivers, mountain ranges and spectacular glimpses of various species of flora and fauna are the most striking aspects of this union territory. Located in the western corner of the Indian subcontinent, this union territory lies between Gujarat and Maharashtra. Its total area is 491 square kilometers. The most interesting aspect of this place is its location in the watershed of the Daman Ganga River, which passes through this region.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli was a Portuguese colony since 1779, but it became a part of India in 1954. Till 1961 it was independently governed and self-government. In this year itself, it became a union territory of India and now it is represented in both the houses of the Indian Parliament.

The main cities of the Union Territory are Dadra and Silvassa. Silvassa is also the capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli is bordered by the Western Ghats to the east and Gujarat to the north and east, while the state of Maharashtra is bordered on the south.

The region is hilly with the presence of the Western Ghats to the northeast of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, but the central part of the region is mostly plain and very fertile.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli consists of one district, one block and 72 villages and as of 2011 India census, it has a population of 3,43,709. A deep study of Dadra and Nagar Haveli reveals that there are several tribes in this region which are Varlai, Konkan, Dhodia and Dablas. These tribal people are independent, self-sufficient and have their own culture and social life.

Dadra consists of three villages and Nagar Haveli consists of Silvassa town and 68 villages. Known for its lush green forests, rolling rivers, mountain ranges and various species of flora and fauna, this union territory is one of the most popular tourist destinations.

The region experiences very pleasant weather from November to March and this time is the best time to visit here. Due to its proximity to the sea, the temperature in summer is not very high and the nights are very pleasant. The southwest monsoon lasts from June to September. During this time there is very heavy rain in this area. Here the rainfall is about 200 to 250 cm. it occurs.

History

Dadra and Nagar Haveli were under Maratha rule before coming under Portuguese control between 1783 and 1785. The Portuguese ruled this land for more than 150 years. In 1954, the Indian National Volunteers forced the Portuguese to leave India. In 1961, it became a Union Territory.

Geography

Its geographical position is 20° 25' North and 73° 15' East. This region is located in the western part of the country and between Gujarat and Maharashtra. It is situated in the watershed of Daman Ganga river. Its total area is 491 square kilometers. 40 percent of the land here is covered by dense forests. It is the homeland of cheerful and colorful tribals who are rich with their folk songs and vibrant lifestyle. Most of the people living here are tribals who are divided into several tribal groups, including the Varlais, Konkans, Dhodias and Dabas. Most of the population here is of Hindus.

The weather of Dadra and Nagar Haveli is greatly influenced by its geographical location. Although this union territory is surrounded by land on all sides, but it is not too far from the sea. On one side of this region is bordered by the Western Ghats, while it lies between Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Agriculture is the main occupation of this state. The tribals grow mostly rice, wheat, sugarcane, paddy, pulses and fruits here. There is no big industry here. Its administration is looked after by the Central Government of India. 40 percent of the land is covered with dense forests and the rest is for the production of rice and other cereals and for grazing animals. Industry development here is limited. The capital city of Silvassa is located at a distance of 14 kms from Bhilad and Vapi. The nearest railway station from here is Vapi railway station of Western Railway, which is at a distance of 17 kms from Silvassa. The nearest airport here is in Mumbai.
